Sarajevo: An underrated Travel Gem in the Heart of Europe

Sarajevo is one of the most underrated travel destinations in Europe. It's a city that has been through a lot, yet it has still managed to preserve it's beauty and history. Sarajevo sits at the meeting point of eastern and western culture in Europe and it's a place where the past and present meet to create a trip that is unique, informative and memorable.

The city has been largely untouched by World War II bombings which means that you can literally feel history in every corner of this town. You will see Ottoman style buildings sitting next to communist block apartments, while churches from different religions stand side-by-side.

Sarajevo's War Torn Past:

Sarajevo has a war torn past that is evident in the buildings that are still standing. bullet holes and damage from grenades can be seen on many of the structures, yet the city has not been completely destroyed.

From 1992 to 1996, Sarajevo was held under siege by the Serbian army.. This was one of the longest sieges in modern history. The city was completely cut off from the rest of the world and endured a lot of damage.

It is estimated that 11,000 people died as a result of the siege and an additional 56,000 were injured.

Today there are bullet holes on many structures throughout Sarajevo which serves as a reminder of this deadly war crime. Most notably the Holiday Inn where 22 people died during attacks over several days in 1994. It has since been converted to a hostel and you can even stay there when you travel.
